NewsAt Pretty Beach Public School we are always busy as we are involved in so many wonderful activities. The activities are as diversified as our students so that we can try to cater for each individual's interests and strengths. Teacher organised activities include School Excursions, Book week activities and Fun Days. The activities run by Year 5 & 6 for their Year 6 Farewell and gift include Mothers Day stall, Cake stall, Clean up Australia Day, Fathers Day stall and breakfast and Jeans for Jeans day.

Australia Day CelebrationsTue 31st Jan 12,Our captains officiated at the Australia Day festivities at Wagstaffe. This was their first official duty as the newly elected School Captains for 2012. |

Year 6 FarewellThu 15th Dec 11,A dazzling "Glitz and Glamour" themed Year 6 Farewell and disco was held to farewell our Year 6 students. The students all had a fabulous night thanks to the efforts of Miss White and Miss Baldock as well as the Year 5 and 6 parents who organised the event. The hall looked stunning, the food was delicious, and the slideshow once again highlighted their achievements. They also showcased the dance moves they learnt this term in the Dance Program. |

End of Year Film/Party and Carols DayMon 12th Dec 11,The whole school attended the end of year film, returned to the school for a Pizza lunch and then performed Carols in the afternoon. Many parents joined us to be entertained as each class performed carols. |

Presentation NightFri 09th Dec 11,Our students were acknowledged for their achievements at our Presentation Night. Congratulations to those students who received class, special, environment and sporting awards. Every student also received their Personal Best Award. In addition we were entertained by our choir and our Year 6 students presented an amusing original performance of their farewell song to end the evening. |

Debating CompetitionTue 06th Dec 11,A group Year 6 debaters competed in the recent debating competition at Brisbane Water Secondary College. While they didn't win they debated well and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. |

Yr 5 & 6 Surf Fun DayMon 05th Dec 11,Yr 5 and 6 had a great day in the surf at Terrigal Beach. They enjoyed many activities organised by SLSC staff who ran the day, |

Kindergarten Reptile Park ExcursionFri 25th Nov 11,Our Kindergarten students enjoyed seeing animals up close on their excursion to the Reptile Park despite the weather. They are learning about animals this term and could see and touch some of these during the day. They also saw how they live and what food they eat. |

Yr 3 & 4 Overnight CampFri 18th Nov 11,Year 3 and 4 students experienced two fun filled days at the Outdoor Educational Experience Overnight camp at Morisset. Over the two days the students participated in canoeing, high ropes, archery, fencing, multiclimb and a senses walk. They also had a county fair, with milkshakes, a donut stand, hair spraying, face painting, a bungy run and mechanical surf board to ride on as well as a camp fire before going to bed. |

Remembrance Day AssemblyFri 11th Nov 11,Year 4 ran our Remembrance Day Assembly. We paused to remember those men and women who have died or suffered in all wars, conflicts and peace operations. We wore poppies to symbolise this. |

Cricket ProgramMon 07th Nov 11,The cricket program has begun with our students enjoying learning new skills. They play modified games to put these skills into practise in a fun way.

Uncle Crumbles Mad Machine - Musical PerformanceFri 28th Oct 11,WOW...our students were outstanding in this adventure through time which really showcased their amazing talents. The performance was a whole school team effort which wouldn't have been possible without the help of our fantastic parent helpers; Karen Barson-Wright- Musical Director, Leah Bennetts-Costuming, Fiona Brodie- Props, David Sneddon – Sound, Kathryn Moore- Choreography and Musical Assistance, Lisa Haymes: Photography, Costumes and Make up, Moses Fotofilli and Matt Wilkinson (KHS Student): Sound and Lighting. Along with numerous other parents who assisted in this extravaganza. Uncle Crumble is an eccentric inventor and the children use his creation a "Celestial Sonic Fission Date Travel Converter" (a time machine) to travel in time. The children had many adventures throughout the performance. They visited prehistoric times, went back to 1967, ancient Rome, the wild west, visited our school 200 years in the future and finally went back to medieval times. |

Year 2/3 SpeechesThu 20th Oct 11,Year 2/3 presented their free speeches to the class. Their speech was on a topic they chose allowing them to present so very passionate speeches to the class. |

Dance ProgramFri 07th Oct 11,Our students are once again participating in Footsteps Dance Program. They are learning about traditional forms of dance, dance skills and social skills while gaining in confidence through self expression. These skills will put to the test at the Year 6 Farewell disco at the end of term. |

Gosford City Council Biodiversity ProjectsFri 23rd Sep 11,Some of our students with their Biodiversity Projects completed as part of Gosford City Council's Greenhouse Program. The aim of students completing these was to learn about the importance of biodiversity which included; threats due to invasion of pests, how habitat loss threatens plants and animals, threats due to pollution and threats to endangered species. |

Yr 5 & 6 Canberra ExcursionFri 16th Sep 11,Our Year 5 and Year 6 students had a very busy yet fun-filled three day excursion to Canberra. They went to many exciting places including Questacon, the War Memorial, Old Parliament House, the AIS as well as the National Museum and Art Gallery. They also went to Parliament House where they were able to met our Local Federal Member Deborah O’Neill. |

Vegetable GardenThu 08th Sep 11,An enthusiastic group of students help look after our vegetable garden. They help plant, weed and water our garden using the water we collect in our water tanks. |

Year 6 Boot CampThu 08th Sep 11,Year 6 recently participated in the Kincumber High School Boot Camp Day. The day focused on encouraging team work, emphasising positive peer interactions and developing student links within our community. The Year 9 students from KHS and Miss Padroth organised a terrific day that was a great success. |

Worm FarmsThu 08th Sep 11,We have worm farms at our school to help our students learn about the environment. They are able to see their food scraps being recycled and watch the worms feed on these scraps. They are then able to use the worm castings and ‘worm juice’ to feed our veggie garden. |

Count Me in Too activitiesThu 08th Sep 11,Year 1/2 have been experimenting with various ‘Count Me in Too’ activities to develop their understanding in numeracy. These games help them to further their knowledge through interacting with the games and one another. Some of these games have been Subtraction Bowling, Paddle Pop Stick Pairs, Doubles Bingo (pictured) and Number Fences. |

Kindergarten Local Area WalkWed 07th Sep 11,Kindergarten walked to Wagstaffe and back to school as part of the HSIE and Science Units of work ‘Places We Know’ and ‘What’s Around Us. During the walk they looked at things from both the natural and built environments. |

Fathers Day BreakfastMon 05th Sep 11,It was fabulous to see so many of our dads attending the Father’s Day Breakfast again this year with their children. Students were than able to enjoy the many different games set up on the oval. |

Fruit & Veggie WeekFri 02nd Sep 11,Our School Canteen promoted eating Fruit and Vegetables with lots of healthy options being available. Students were able to sample then buy items they wouldn't normally eat during Fruit and Veggie Week. |

Book FairThu 25th Aug 11,Students were extremely excited when they viewed our special “Book Fair” presentation in our Library. Thanks to the many families who purchased books as sales were over $2,900 which enabled our school to add almost $1,000 worth of books for our school library. |

Kindergarten Dream Bedroom DesignsWed 24th Aug 11,Our Kindergarten students were asked to design and make their dream bedroom. They used a variety of different classroom items to create some very imaginative designs. |

Grand Friends DayWed 24th Aug 11,Our school welcomed many Grand Parents and extended family members to our Grand Friend’s Day. The students certainly enjoyed singing in their class / whole school groups, performing skits as well as presenting a creative Narrative called “Missing”. They then were invited to stay for a scrumptious morning tea and a chat after the mini concert. Many also visited our Book Fair in our Library which had been decorated with student’s creative work samples. |

Year 1 & 2 Rumbalara VisitTue 23rd Aug 11,Year 1 & 2 students went to Rumbalara to investigate Wet and Dry Environments. They looked at the diversity of living things as they encountered various mini beasts. Activities included; dip-netting to survey aquatic life, a field survey of land mini beasts using butterfly nets, basic water quality testing and a rainforest discovery walk. |

Kindergarten 2012 PicnicTue 16th Aug 11,As part of our 2012 Kindergarten Orientation program, the students from Year 6, Year 5 and Kindergarten joined 2012 Kindergarten students for a picnic at Turo Park to begin our Orientation Program. This allowed the new kindergarten students familiarise themselves with each other and meet students from our school while participating in a picnic and games. |

NSW Cricket WorkshopsFri 12th Aug 11,Kinder to Yr 6 students participated in NSW Cricket workshops. These were to help promote a healthy, active lifestyle through cricket. Students were taught a number of different skills associated with cricket as a precursor to next term's weekly cricket clinics. |

There were some very sensational speeches presented by our students to an audience of family and friends. Premiers Reading ChallengeWed 06th Jul 11,Many of our students have taken part in this year's Premiers Reading Challenge. The Challenge aims to encourage in students a love of reading for leisure and pleasure, and to enable students to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. |

They had to say how they made their model then present a speech to the class. Many of these were backed up with a slide show presentation. The best presenter of their speech will then speak at our Annual Public Speaking Night. |

Environmental Leadership DayThu 16th Jun 11,Gosford City Council's Greenhouse Program ran an Environmental Leadership Day with six of our Year 5 & 6 students attending. The day involved small groups of students from both our school and other local schools, rotating through activities to support learning about biodiversity. |

Mariners Football ClinicsFri 10th Jun 11,Students from Years 2 to 6 participated in the Mariners ACTIVE schools program. Damien Brown from Central Coast Mariners FC ran the sessions which were aimed at developing their football skills as well as promoting positive team building skills. All students had a fantastic time and received a promotional bag of goodies. |

Annual Athletics CarnivalThu 09th Jun 11,After two previous attempts our athletics carnival final went ahead. Our students had a wonderful day showing enthusiasm and sportsmanship in all events despite the cold weather. Well done to all of the competitors. |

Snake TailsMon 06th Jun 11,Bob from Snake Tails entertained our students as part of our Environment Day celebrations. He explained how snakes should be treated if encountered. Bob showed us part of his vast collection of reptiles which included venomous snakes, lizards, turtles and pythons found in the local area. |

Environment DayMon 06th Jun 11,To celebrate Environment Day our students learnt about the biodiversity and sustainability of our environment. The aim of these learning experiences was to encourage students to enter the competition offered by Gosford City Council’s Greenhouse program. Many students also wore mufti and made a gold coin donation for Devil Ark, a program that is trying to save the Tasmanian Devil from extinction. |

Reconciliation Week - Jody Deamer VisitFri 03rd Jun 11,Our students enjoyed another visit from Jody Deamer from Warrigal Art Gallery as part of our Reconciliation Week activities. She showed photos, videos and artefacts from her trips in central Australia. This engaging our students to 'talk recognition' about what we all share. |

Yrs 3 & 4 Observatory Hill Education Centre ExcursionWed 25th May 11,Our students participated a program 'Toys, Tales and Teatime'. They visited sites looking at different periods of time in the Rocks area. They were told a tales that related to the people who may have lived in that place at a particular time. Following these they played games, made toys and visited Susannah Place allowing them to see how life was in the past. |

Boys Soccer Knockout / Gala DayFri 20th May 11,Our boys Soccer Knockout Team played Erina Heights Public School at Frost Reserve Kincumber. Despite a fairly evenly matched game and fantastic effort by our team they were unfortunately knocked out. They then were able to play a further two games in a Gala Day style competition. Thanks to the referee in these later games giving them guidance on the field and ensuring they all had a great day. |

Walk Safely to School DayFri 20th May 11,Our students certainly put their best foot forward when they eagerly participated in this national event. They were encouraged to walk to school as a means of promoting road safety, health and the environment. |

Yrs 5 & 6 C.A.R.E.S Bike Ed CourseThu 19th May 11,Our students went on an excursion to the CARES (Community and Road Education Scheme) Bicycle Education Centre. Our 4/5 and 5/6 students learnt about bicycle safety and maintenance, increase skill development and increase awareness of general road rules. The course was conducted by Bicycle Police. |

Peer Support GroupsTue 17th May 11,Well done to our Year 6 students who are running our Peer Support Program. This whole school Personal Development program aims to develop and promote positive peer relationships throughout the whole school and encourage general social skill development. The unit being explored this year is resilience which specifically focuses on developing students skills in identifying their strengths, celebrating their achievements and seeking assistance when faced with challenges. |

Netball Gala DayMon 16th May 11,Congratulations to our wonderful Netball team which finished second in the Netball Gala Day . All girls displayed team spirit, a thirst for competition and sport in an extremely sportsmanship type manner. Well done as this was our first School Netball Knockout team after several years of non participation in Gala Days/Knockout competition. |

Year 1/2 Toy MuseumThu 12th May 11,Year 1/2 Students classroom was converted into a Toy Museum as they looked at toys from the past. They did this as part of their unit of work on the 'Way We Were'. They discovered how different toys were when their parents and grandparents were children. |

Sport in SchoolsFri 06th May 11,Our students are participating in the Sport in Schools program this term. This program involves physical education and fundamental skills such as balance, co-ordination, hitting and striking, throwing, cognitive learning and fitness. It will also develop their social skill development and team building skills. |

Mothers Day Morning Tea / Biggest Morning TeaFri 06th May 11,We held our annual Mother’s Day Morning Tea and supported “The Biggest Morning Tea”. Mums enjoyed a delicious morning tea and they also participated in a trivia competition. They were also surprised with a little treat of flowers and chocolates given to them by their children. All donations from the day went to the Cancer Council of Australia. |

Annual Cross CountryFri 29th Apr 11,Our students competed in our Annual Cross Country races despite the inclement weather. The students ran from the boat ramp along the ‘dog’ track on the edge of the waterfront to Hardys Bay and back again. They were supervised by some of our parents encouraging them as they passed. Congratulations Mr McInerney for organising another successful event. (They too enjoyed an ice-block on their return to school.) |

Kindergarten / Year 1 Mini Cross CountryFri 29th Apr 11,Our Kindergarten and Year 1 students competed in our mini Cross Country organised by Mrs Selwood. They enjoyed running around our school oval being guided by our Year 6 leaders. They were then rewarded them with an ice block to cool down with afterwards. |

We were reminded why we commemorate ANZAC Day and how it honours all those who died and served in military operations for our country. Mr Daryl Ford, who joined our school ceremony talked about the medals servicemen and women receive when they represent Australia at war. We were also privileged to learn about and see a real Victoria’s Cross Medal that George Payne received for his contribution to the Vietnam War. |

Annual Easter Hat ParadeThu 07th Apr 11,We were dazzled by our students colourful Easter Hats which were paraded with pride. Many prizes were awarded for the most original hat, the craziest hat and the most colourful and brightest hat. Prior to this our students also enjoyed a picnic lunch with family and friends. |

Year 3 & 4 Daley’s Point Aboriginal Relic Site ExcursionFri 01st Apr 11,
Our Year 3 & 4 students visited the Daley’s Point Aboriginal Relic Site as part of units of work they are studying in H.S.I.E. and Science & Technology. On the walk they engaged in a number of activities. These included ochre painting, inspection of engravings, inspection of midden sites and kinship role-play.

Year 5 & 6 Rocks Ramble ExcursionThu 31st Mar 11,Our students enjoyed exploring the heritage area in the Rocks Sydney. They participated in different activities which emphasised the built and social environment using sensory awareness and problem solving strategies. They were made aware of how this area changed from our first urban settlement to become part of the global economy. This was evident through comparisons made between present and past uses of buildings. This included issues such as past threats to the area and the importance of conservation especially within the built environment. |

The National Young Leaders DayTue 29th Mar 11,Year 6 participated in this day which was a fantastic opportunity for them to learn about leadership from the personal experiences and knowledge of leaders within our community. These speakers included Kurt Fearnely (Australian Paralympian), Talia Fowler (winner of So You Think You Can Dance 2009), Jessica Watson (Young Australian of the Year, Solo Sailor), Mike Martin (General Manager of the Halogen Foundation) and Greg Mullins (NSW Fire Brigade Commissioner). These leaders were all exceptional examples of leaders within our community and helped our students to develop a terrific understanding of how to be a great leader and ways to implement these leadership skills. |

Harmony DayMon 21st Mar 11,Our School recognised Harmony Day to help celebrate the unified and inclusive nature of our nation and to promote the benefits of cultural diversity. The students all wore orange, completed various class activities and enjoyed a picnic lunch with their parents. They also attended an assembly to assist with their understanding of the message ‘Everyone Belongs.’ |

Year 1/2 Flying Maths LessonThu 17th Mar 11,As part of their maths lesson our Year 1/2 made paper aeroplanes and then launched them. They were able to measure how far they flew with some travelling 4 metres. |

National Ride2School DayWed 16th Mar 11,Congratulations to all the students for wheeling to school on National Ride2School Day. We had 55 students who rode part or all the way to school. We are hoping this will encourage our students keep up the wheeling throughout the year, as we believe the benefits greatly assist in the students’ personal and academic development. |

Bullying No WayMon 14th Mar 11,Friday 18 March 2011 is Australia's first annual community awareness campaign to address bullying. The event will be on the third Friday in March each year. On this day our school also celebrated Harmony Day which encompasses inclusiveness and respect for others. Similarly our school is raising the awareness that it is a national day against bullying. Over the ensuing weeks classes will also be undertaking lessons in PD Health, PE relating to bullying. Further information can be found on the website "Bullying No Way". School DiscoThu 10th Mar 11,The School Discos were a roaring success with the teachers showing off their dancing skills with our talented students. The disco and mufti day Year 6 fundraiser were a huge success. We raised $550 for the Year 6 students’ end of year celebrations. |

Zone Swimming CarnivalWed 09th Mar 11,Congratulations to our swimming team who represented our school so well at the Zone Swimming Carnival. A fantastic effort with many students making it to finals. Three of our students will be going on to represent Woy Woy Zone at the Regional Swimming Carnival. |

B.E.A.R ReadingWed 09th Mar 11,Our Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students are doing our home reading program B.E.A.R. Reading which stands for Be Excited And Read. They take home a book each night, read it to their parent/guardian and return it the next day where they will read the same book to a volunteer B.E.A.R. reading helper or their teacher. This program ensures that children become increasingly confident in their own reading ability. |

Clean Up AustraliaFri 04th Mar 11,In conjunction with the Clean Up Australia day, our school held a ‘Clean Up Our School and Local Environment’ day. Our students did a fantastic job not only making our school cleaner and tidier but they also cleaned up the foreshore opposite our school and along the dog track. |

Celebrating 80 years of School BankingThu 24th Feb 11,Our school captains accepted a cheque for $300.00 as part of the Commonwealth Banks celebrations for 80 years of school banking. They received this from the local Umina Branch Manager and Area Manger. This money is aimed at kick-starting the schools fundraising for the year. |

Sport for Life Gymnastics ProgramFri 18th Feb 11,During Term 1 our students are once again doing gymnastics. This program helps our students develop skills that will give them good exercise habits for life. |

Maroon Day for Flood VictimsThu 17th Feb 11,Our students dressed in maroon to raise money for Queensland schools affected by the flood crisis. We raised $175 with some students collecting over the weekend before to add to our donation. We also had an assembly and a minutes silence as a further sign of respect to these victims. |

Tree PlantingFri 12th Nov 10,Our Year 6 students with assistance from their Kindergarten buddies planted some new trees around our school. These native trees and bushes were obtained from Gosford City Council. These natives will enhance the natural habitat around our school. |

Environmental MuralsFri 29th Oct 10,Our Special Purpose room has three murals to remind our students to look after the environment. They are 'Water is Life,' 'Let's Get it Sorted' and 'Saving Energy Saves Cents.' These were designed by the students and painted by Sue Richardson. |

Art ShowFri 10th Sep 10,Our school held its biannual art show and once again displayed some dazzling art works. Each classroom was transformed into a gallery displaying three pieces of work from each class. We cetainly have some talented artists at our school. |

Water testingFri 04th Jun 10,Rachel from Waterwatch worked with groups of students to check the water in the estuary opposite our school. This occurred during our annual Environment Day. They checked the PH, salinity, turbity and water temperature. The results were very pleasing as our local waterway was found to be quite healthy. |

Environmentally Friendly CanteenWed 20th Feb 08,Our canteen uses reusable containers. As a part of the Waste Free Canteen Project we obtained grants to purchase the containers. This helps reduce the waste from the canteen as it replaces a lot of the pre-packaged food sold in the canteen. |
