Quality education in a unique environment

Focused on our environment

In preparing our children for a sustainable future our school demonstrates a key focus on environmental awareness programs.

Our Environmental Awareness Programs encourage student responsibility for preserving the local and wider environment. Our programs include a range of waste management and recycling activities, bush regeneration, water and energy conservation.

We have developed a ‘hands-on’ approach having our children participate in local environment field trips, environmental audits and initiatives and a wide range of educational activities. For example, our students are at the centre of an initiative to rehabilitate the rare Red-crowned Toadlet.

Year 5 & 6 Maitland Bay Excursion

Our Years 5 and 6 students went on their local area walk to Maitland Bay and Putty Beach.

They looked at the plant and animal life, aboriginal bush tucker, the “Maitland” wreck and the marine reserve.

Water testing

Rachel from Waterwatch worked with groups of students to check the water in the estuary opposite our school. This occurred during our annual Environment Day.

They checked the PH, salinity, turbity and water temperature. The results were very pleasing as our local waterway was found to be quite healthy.

Vegetable Patch

Our students are beginning to harvest their first crop of vegies from our school vegetable garden.

The garden is looked after by groups of students from each class working with our wonderful parent volunteers.

Worm Farms

We have worm farms to help our students learn about our environment.

They are able to see their food scraps being recycled, watch the worm feed on these scraps. They are then able to use the worm castings and ‘worm tea’ on our veggie garden.

Environment Day

Our Environment Day activities left our students with a better understanding of our environment and how we can care for it.

This was gained through presenters from Rumbalara, Taronaga Zoo, Gosford City Council, Theiss, National Parks and Wildlife and Fisheries who all came to our school. Along with other activities presented by community members and parents the whole school was involved in this fantastic day.

Waste Audit

Year 4/5 conducted a waste audit as part of their unit of work on ‘Recycling to Conserve the Earth.’

They looked at the different types of waste we produce. From their findings they then worked on some key strategies to overcome the problems they found.

Clean Up Australia

In conjunction with the Clean Up Australia day, our school held a ‘Clean Up Our School and Local Environment’ day.

Our students did a fantastic job not only making our school cleaner and tidier but they also cleaned up Turo Park and the foreshore opposite our school.

Waste Watchers Program

Our students attended a Waste Watchers Program and carried out activities to help raise awareness of the consequences of a range of waste management actions.

They investigated the benefit of reducing waste, reusing and recycling. This assisted their understanding of ways to care for the environment and simple effective things they can do to protect and conserve our natural and built environments.

Gosford City Council Environment Awards

Once again our students entered their projects in the Gosford City Council Environment Awards.

The theme for 2009 was based around the concept of ecological footprints and the students found out ways to leave ‘smaller footprints.’ One of our Year 2 students was also a prize winner.

Red-crowned Toadlet

Our students were excited when they found a Red-crowned Toadlet at school near our bush classroom.

It is a threatened species and our school is one of the few safe havens for this species.

Environmetal Education- Enery Audit

Mark Attwooll from the Rumbalara Environmental Education Centre visited our school to discuss Environment Education. Yr 6 students looked at other forms of energy, aside from coal through practical experiments.

Following this the students conducted an energy audit of our school and using the data were able to make informed judgements as to the effectiveness of our energy consumption and ways it could be improved.

Environmentally Friendly Canteen

Our canteen uses reusable containers.

As a part of the Waste Free Canteen Project we obtained grants to purchase the containers. This helps reduce the waste from the canteen as it replaces a lot of the pre-packaged food sold in the canteen.

Environmental Murals

Our Canteen has three murals to remind our students to look after our environment.

They are ‘Water is Life,’ Let’s get it Sorted’ and ‘Saving Energy Makes Cents.’  These were designed and painted by Sue Richardson.
