Local excursion walk

Excursions

Students at Pretty Beach Public School take part in regular Field Trips that support their Key Learning Areas. Of particular interest are our local area walks where students learn about our local history, places of geographic and environmental significance and develop a sense of community in the local area.

Our school enjoys a partnership with the community and students regularly engage in activities inside and outside the school that help prepare them for future community involvement through attendance and participation in Harmony Day celebrations, Anzac Day Service, Leadership training, Rumbalara Field Studies Centre. Our major overnight excursions include trips for Year 3 and 4 to Sydney (even years) and Year 5 and 6 to Canberra (odd years) and Bathurst (even years).


Years 1 and 2 Rumbalara Excursion

Our Year 1 and Year 2 students went to Rumbalara Environmental Education Centre as part of their H.S.I.E. and Science units of work on ‘The Need for Shelter’ and ‘Back to Nature’.

Students went on a bush walk through observing animal shelters. They then worked in groups helping a baby possum find her home, a bird nest making activity in which the students imagined themselves as birds and finally a discussion and craft activity on the subject of houses for people. Our students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and learnt a lot about shelters in the process.


NAIDOC Week Assembly

At our NAIDOC assembly our students presented their work they had completed over the week.

The theme this year was 'Unsung Heroes - Closing the Gap by Leading Their Way' and our students enjoyed completing many cultural and educational activities during the week


Warragul Art Visit

As part of our NAIDOC Week Celebrations Jodie from Warragul Art visited our school showing our students art and artifacts from her gallery.

Our students learnt where these pieces were made and how they were made.


Watertight Program

Our students completed activities focusing on water conservation and water use as part of our Education Week activities.

They also looked at the Central Coast water supply system and the protection of our local water ways.


Education Week Open Day

Our Education Week Open Day was a success despite the weather.

The students’ performances included drama, story recounts, art works, drama, poetry reading, dance troupe and choir. The parents and other family members then visited the students’ classrooms and had lunch with their children.


Theiss Recycling Plant Excursion

Our 4/5 students went on an excursion to the Theiss Recycling Plant.

They completed as session on recycling, watched our rubbish being sorted at the plant, saw how our rubbish became contaminated from the wrong items being recycled and saw some recycled materials. They now have a better understanding of how they should recycle. Following this they stopped at Kariong Eco Gardens to see how that operates.


School Official Opening

The Official Opening of our new facilities was performed by Hon Belinda Neal MP and Hon John Della Bosca MLC.

Official guests included past Principals and P & C Presidents who had be instrumental in obtaining the funding for our new facilities. Also in the official party were members of our current P & C Executive, our local Member Chris Hartcher and Auntie Barbara an Elder of the Mingaletta Aboriginal Corporation. Our School Leaders did a fantastic job leading the ceremony and we were entertained by our Kindergarten students.


CARES Bike Education

Our students went on an excursion to the CARES (Community and Road Education Scheme) Bicycle Education Centre.

Our 4/5 and 5/6 students learnt about bicycle safety and maintenance, increase skill development and increase awareness of general road rules. The course was conducted by Bicycle Police.


National Parks Talk

As part of their HSIE unit of work on State National Parks, Martin from National Parks talked to our 2/3 and 3/4 classes.

He discussed the changes to local National Park areas including Putty, Tallow and Lobster Beaches as well as Bouddi National Park. He talked about the local fauna and flora and measures in place to protect them such as fox baiting and clearing of invasive plants like lantana and bittu bush. Thanks to Martin our students certainly have a better understanding of why we protect our National Parks and their benefits to our community.


Peer Support

Our Year 6 leaders are conducing Peer Support sessions with a mix of students from K – Year 5 in each group.

In these sessions they are working on issues such as: values they possess, being caring towards others, accepting differences in other people and to have respect and discussing ways they can demonstrate respect for others just to name a few of the concepts being covered in these sessions.


Year 4/5 learn about Germany

Students from Year 4/5 had visitors from Germany tell them about their country.

This was to help them with their work on Cultural Diversity and they were told about their language, lifestyle and culture.


Year 3/4 are studying 'Mini Worlds' near our school

Our Year 3/4 Class went to the waterfront opposite our school to look at the different micro worlds there.

This was to assist them with their work on ‘Mini Worlds’ Science unit.


ANZAC Day Service

Our School leaders conducted a very moving ANZAC Day service.

The students were reminded why we commemorate ANZAC Day and how it honours all those who died and served in military operations for our country.


Easter Hat Parade

Our Easter Hat Parade was certainly a hit with our students who all made a huge effort with some delicous looking hats.

Our P & C organised this, provided prizes as well as raising funds to be utilised in our school.


Yrs 4/5 & 5/6 Egg Challenge

Our students had a challenge to make a device to enable an egg to be dropped from a height and not break.

They had to do this with  just newspaper and strips of masking tape. Some of their devices were successful wheras others failed to protect their egg. This was part of the Easter activities both classes participated in.


Yrs 4/5 & 5/6 Easter Fun

Our senior students enjoyed carrying out their Easter procedure as they made their own chocolates.

They melted the chocolate to spoon into moulds for Easter chocolates. They also had to design a gift box for their chocolates to take them home in.


Harmony Day

Our School recognised Harmony Day to help celebrate the unified and inclusive nature of our nation and to promote the benefits of cultural diversity.

The students all wore orange and enjoyed a picnic lunch with their parents. They also attended an assembly to assist with their understanding of the message ‘Everyone Belongs.’


National Ride2school Day

Our school participated in the National Ride2school Day with 39 students riding to school.

The aim of this day was to promote regular active to and from school.


Peer Support Training

 

Our Year 6 students have been learning how to conduct peer support groups.

This helps them to develop communication skills, group management, decision making, problem solving and leadership.


Our Community

Year 4/5 students went for a walk as part of their work on "Our Community."

From this they were able to describe many of the features of the local area.


Year 6 Farewell

A flashy, paparazzi pink, black and white themed, Year 6 Farewell Dinner and Disco was held to say goodbye to our outgoing Year 6 students.

The stars (students) attending had a great night thanks to Mrs Ghanotous, Mrs Allan and the Year 5 parents who organised the evening. Everyone had a delicious meal, the hall looked stunning and the cake featured the departing students. Also the disco enabled the students to use the dance moves leant in their Dancesport classes thanks to Abbey the DJ.


Annual Presentation Night

Every student received their Personal Best awards at our Annual Presentation Night.

Congratulations to those students who received class, special, environment and sporting awards.We were also entertained by our choir and Year 6’s farewell song. Thank you to our official guests and community members for attending. Congratulations also to our new captains and vice captains for 2010.


Year 5/6 Boat Regatta

As part of the Year 5/6 unit “Life’s a Beach” students went to the swimming pool opposite our school to try out their boats.

They had races to see whose was the fastest. It was interesting to see how well some floated.


Yr 2 Lobster Beach Local Area Walk

Year 2 went on their local area walk to Lobster Beach. This is part of their environmental education program.

The children took part in a variety of activities, including relay races, flag races, sand modeling, as well as appreciating the natural beauty that surrounds them.


Surf Fun Day

Years 5 & 6 had a fun day at a Beach Education Program (Surf Fun Safe Day) organised by Surf Lifesaving Central Coast at Terrigal Beach.

They played volley ball and other beach games, were show how to use paddle boards, had relays and even rescued each other.


Reptile Park Excursion

Kindergarten and their Year 6 buddies went to the Reptile Park as part of their unit of work on ‘Living Things.’

Our students enjoyed seeing the many animals, birds, spiders and reptiles. They also went to the Feathers, Fur and Scales Show which a number of our children were actively involved in. They had a wonderful day with their buddies and left the park knowing a lot more about the many living things there.


Years 5 & 6 Canberra Excursion

Years 5 & 6 had a very busy and hectic Canberra excursion.

They visited the main attractions of Canberra including the War Memorial, Botanical Gardens, National Art Gallery, National Museum, and Parliament House. The trip was very informative and will assist our students with there HSIE work on Government.


Dad's Breakfast

Our Dad’s Breakfast was once again enjoyed by lots of dads, granddads and other significant males, as part of the Dad's in Education program.

This program is aimed at heightening the awareness of the male role model in schools. It was wonderful to see the children proudly showing off their work to their dads.
