Literacy & Numeracy

Pretty Beach has strong programs in Literacy and Numeracy from Kindergarten to Year 6. Our commitment to the pursuit of excellence in outcomes based quality teaching and learning programs is realised by providing a variety of opportunities to all students that cater for individual learning styles, cultural backgrounds and values within our student body.

We offer a variety of special programs and provide a ‘hands on’ approach to learning:

  • Rainbow Readers Y3-6
  • Whole School Public Speaking program that requires each child to produce a speech on a given topic
  • Participation in the NSW Multicultural Public Speaking and Debating Competition enabling students to further develop their confidence and public speaking talents
  • Premiers Spelling Bee
  • 'Hands on’ mathematics programs such as Count Me In Too which provides activities that help teachers understand how children learn mathematics and the strategies they use
  • Teachers present a ‘Numeracy Now’ Workshop to update parents on the changes in the Maths syllabus and ways to help their children at home and at school.

Annual Public Speaking Night

Our students presented their speeches in an excellent fashion at our annual Public Speaking Night.

 

They spoke on a variety of different topics informing, entertaining and enthralling the over 50 parents, friends, relatives and staff present at the night. The capability of the speakers certainly impressed all present.


4/5 International Feast

Our 4/5 class have been learning about ‘Cultural Diversity’ with each student studying a country.

They had an international feast with each student bringing in food to represent their country as a culmination of their work.


Year 3/4 Mini Beast Environments

Year 3/4 created project was to create a mini ecosystems for a mini beast.

They then had to present a speech to the class explaining the process of building the habitat. Also the food they eat and finally answer questions from other students at the end of their speech. This formed part of their science unit ‘Mini Worlds.’


Yr 5/6 Natural Disasters Assignments

Yr 5/6 has been learning about natural disasters such as volcanoes, hurricanes, cyclones, earthquakes and blizzards.

They had to work in groups to research and create their assignments during lesson time. They were then required to present their findings to the rest of the class. This was part of their unit of work ‘What’s the Weather.’


Recycled Product Assignment

Our Year 4/5 students made their own recycled product.

This was part of their Science and Technology unit of work on recycling. They were required to make and design a product they could sell using recyclable materials.


Year 5/6 Packaging and Processing Assignment

Year 5/6 completed an assignment on packaging and processing.

This was part of their Science and Technology Unit of work “The Food We Eat.” They looked at the process you go through to manufacture food and products to complete this assignment.


Year 1/2 Shelters

Our Year 1/2 students made a shelter as part of their unit of work 'Need for Shelter.'

They were required to design, make a present their shelter to the rest of the class. Some very clever well thought out means of shelter were created.


Year 4/5 Weather Projects

Our Year 4/5 students had to design a device to measure the weather.

They also had to complete a log of what they did, how successful the device was and any improvements that could be made. Finally they presented it to the rest of the class.


Year 3/4 Book in Box

Year 3/4 had to complete a review of a book and then they had to create a box about the book.

They also had to put items inside the box showing their understanding of the story. Finally they had to present their review to the in the form of a speech, which was assessed by their classmates. There were some very innovative and complex designs presented.


Community Visitor Les Walker

Mr Les Walker a local community member and well know to some of our students visited Yr 4/5 to talk about our community.

As they are learning about our local community this talk helped them to understand the many changes which have occurred in the area. Mr Walker has lived in the area for the past 20 years.


Pancake Procdure Yr 4/5

Year 4/5 students made pancakes appropriately on Pancake Tuesday.

After writing the procedure they enjoyed mixing cooking then eating their pancakes.

 


Ripper Reading Program

Students from Yrs 3 and 4 are involved in quiet reading time whilst the students from Kinder, Year 1 and 2 are reading to the Yr 6 students.

This new initiative is to promote a love and habit of reading throughout the school and it is proving to be very successful.


Year 5 Creative Writing

Year 5 are enjoying working on their creative writing while the other students are at ripper reading.

They are carrying out various activities aimed at improving their creative writing skills.


Gosford City Reads

All of our students participated in the Gosford City Reads program. 

Four of our students also attended a workshop at Kincumber High school with author Felicity Pulman.  Felicity talked about her books and the process of writing.  Children were particularly interested to find out where her ideas came from.


Regional Public Speaking

Congratulations to our students who represented the school at the Local Final for the Regional Multicultural Public Speaking Competition at Gosford PS.

They performed at a high level for their prepared speech and also proved to be outstanding impromptu speakers.  The topic for the Yrs 3 & 4 impromptu speech was ‘Family’ and the Yrs 5 & 6 topic was ‘Role Models’. Two of our students won and will be competing at the next level.  This is a great reflection on the terrific public speaking program we have in our school.
